Geographic and Demographic Analysis of Recruitment Across Industries in India

India's industrial sector is the backbone of its trade network and has positioned the country at the forefront of the world. As per the World GDP Ranking 2024 list, our country has become the fifth-largest economy in the world. Apart from the usual IT sector, industries like manufacturing, retail, logistics, FMCG, automobile, and more are major players in terms of the GDP. These sectors not only create employment but also promote foreign investments, enhancing India's financial stability.

Overall, the entire industry is driven by young robust work personnel who are responsible for transforming the economic landscape of the country. According to a report titled Workforce Development in India Policies and Practices published by the Asian Development Bank, among India’s 1 billion population, 500 million people are contributing to maintaining a GDP of approx. 9% in the last four years. Out of these numbers, almost 12 million people join the workforce every year.

However, as India is evolving as a bigger player in the world, the complexities of recruitment in the industrial sector are becoming a challenge. As we thrive in the market dynamics, it is important to have a look at the behind-the-scenes of workforce employment and the complexities in bulk recruitment services. It's also crucial to highlight how geographic and demographic factors and gender diversity play a role in the business.

Logistics

The logistics industry majorly depends upon transport, smooth delivery, operational supply chains and warehouses. Therefore, the sector needs bulk recruitment services to keep itself functioning. The type of work in this field often leads to high demand of working personnel and the majority of them are predominantly men. A report by Women Entrepreneur India states that, as of 2018, the female workforce in the Indian logistics workforce increased to 15%.

Hindustan Times mentions around 7.7 million of India’s population is working in logistics. And approximately 80% of the same are between 21-30 years with an average pay of ₹20,000-22,000 per month. Spread across India, the logistics sector thrives in major metros of the country including Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Chennai.

Manufacturing

Manufacturing employs India’s major chunk of the workforce and generates a high demand for skilled professionals. This sector is spread in the major cities of Indian regions like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. According to the India Brand Equity Foundation, the manufacturing sector contributes nearly 17% to the GDP of the country with over 27.3 million employees working in it. In fact, it is one of the most promising sectors contributing to the economy and is expected to give 25% output by 2025.

Talking about the gender roles in the industry, despite men leading the forefront of the field, almost 12% of the workforce in the manufacturing sector are women. They are mainly employed in fields such as electronics, textiles, food, etc.

Retail

The retail sector employs personnel like cashiers, store managers, sales representatives, etc. The industry has spread its wings across tier-1 and tier-2 cities of India but its major hub is situated in metropolitan areas including Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Kolata, and Bengaluru. Retail contributes around 10% to the overall country’s GDP. Meanwhile, the sector employs around 8% of human resources and, as per the International Journal of Research and Review, 25-30% of the total workforce are women.

FMCG

The FMCG industry is one of the fastest-growing ones in the country. It specifically includes work personnel who can perform tasks like producing goods, packaging, selling, and distributing. This sector boasts employees from both urban, semi-urban, and rural areas present in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.

The FMCG has around 8.9% of its contribution to India’s GDP as of 2022, which has made it the fourth-largest sector among all. Despite this industry offering female-friendly tasks, a fortuneindia.com report suggests there are only 13% of women in the workforce.

Automobile

The automobile industry of India has shown remarkable growth over the years. It has become the 3rd largest automobile market around the globe with a contribution of 7.1% to the country’s GDP. India’s major automobile hotspots are in cities Gurugram, Pune, Sanand, and Chennai. When it comes to recruiting working personnel here, unlike the rest of the industries, the workforce needs to be smartly trained and needs specific skills. Therefore, the human resources working in this sector are exclusive and they are not hired in bulk.

However, just like every sector, most of the employees are men. But, according to the Economic Times, the automobile industry boasts 34% of its workers are women. Many of them even hold managerial and administrative positions.

Conclusion

Hiring for the workforce in such industries is a complicated process, which depends heavily on multiple geographic and demographic factors. That's where bulk recruitment services come into the picture. They help fulfil various high-volume hiring needs across logistics, manufacturing, retail, FMCG, and automobile industries. Apart from a few social challenges of gender disparity, and lack of skill (which are expected to improve with better rates every passing year), these sectors continue to play at the forefront of the Indian economy. Along with recruitment practices, and a balanced workforce the industry is evolving steadily.
